About Doodle Sizing

Goldendoodles and Irishdoodles can come in a range of sizes, depending on the size of the parent dogs. Here at Ponsonby, we breed Mini, Medium, and Standard sized doodles.

How Does Doodle Sizing Work?

Doodles can come in all different shapes and sizes, so it's best to start your understanding of doodle sizing by learning what each weight category of doodle is called. Keep in mind that Doodles and Poodles use different weight classes and terminology. A Giant sized doodle is 80lbs or above. A Standard sized doodle is 50-80lbs. A Medium sized doodle is 35-50lbs. A Mini sized doodle is 25-35lbs. A Petite sized doodle is 25lbs or below. Here at Ponsonby, we breed Standards, Mediums, Minis, and occasionally Petites.

The size of a Doodle puppy is determined by the size of its parents. Golden Retrievers and Irish Setters are both Standard sized dogs, but Poodles can range from Standard to Toy. In our program, this means that in order to have a Mini or Petite sized doodle puppy, the papa must be a Mini Poodle.

Standard sized Doodles mature between 50-80lbs. Here at Ponsonby, we do not typically exceed 70lbs. Standard dogs have historically been bred to assist in hunting in groups or packs, meaning that Standard Doodles will bond equally to everyone in the home and work very well in a family environment. They are also wonderful solo companions for any single person looking for a furry best friend.

Standard dogs thrive best in active homes and in open spaces. They require more exercise and food than their smaller counterparts, but can be left alone for longer periods of time without experiencing anxiety. This makes them ideal for people with a traditional 9-5 work schedule.

Medium Doodles

Medium sized Doodles mature between 35-50lbs. This size can also be referred to as a "Small Standard" by some. These dogs combine the personality and activity level of the standard dog, with the compact, ease of size of the mini dog. They are a wonderful in between size that can keep up on hikes, but also fit comfortably on the couch.

In our program, Medium doodle puppies are most often found in litters with a Standard sized mama and a Mini sized papa. These breedings usually produce a litter where the smallest puppies are Minis and the biggest puppies are Mediums. You can also occasionally find a Medium sized puppy as the smallest puppy in a Standard litter, hence the nickname "Small Standard."

Mini doodles mature between 25-35lbs and Petite doodles mature under 25lbs. Here at Ponsonby, we do not typically breed lower than 20lbs.

Mini and petite sized dogs were historically bred to be lap dogs for aristocracy. They are often referred to as "velcro dogs" since they always want to be close to you, no matter where you go. Because mini and petite dogs are such devoted companions, it is not recommended to leave them alone for over 3-4 hours at a time. Mini and petite dogs are best suited to individuals and families who work from home, work 9-5 but are able to visit on their lunch break, are able to hire a dog sitter, are retired, or who have another dog to keep the mini/petite dog company.

Mini and petite dogs bond very deeply, and typically have a favourite person. This does not mean that they only like one person. It means that when it's time to watch a movie or go to bed, they will prefer to be on their favourite person's lap. That being said, they will still love all members of the family and will get along well in a group environment with other people and/or dogs.
