About Doodle Generations

Goldendoodles and Irishdoodles can have a range of coat qualities and shedding levels, depending on which generation of doodle the dog is. Here at Ponsonby, we breed F1, F1B, and F1BB generations.

F1 Goldendoodles & Irishdoodles

The F1 generation is the first generation cross between two purebred dogs of different breeds. In our program, that either means a cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever to create an F1 Goldendoodle, or a cross between a Poodle and an Irish Setter to create an F1 Irishdoodle. This generation is 50% Poodle and either 50% Golden Retriever or 50% Irish Setter.

F1 Goldendoodles and F1 Irishdoodles will always have wavy, teddy bear style coats. This is because both Golden Retrievers and Irish Setters have flat coats, and Poodles have curly coats. Crossing these two coat types always results in a wavy coat. Some F1 doodles have a softer wave and some have a stronger wave, but you will never see a curly coat in the F1 generation.

Golden Retrievers are high shedding dogs, whereas Irish Setters are moderate shedding dogs. This means that an F1 Irishdoodle will shed less than an F1 Goldendoodle. F1 Goldendoodles are low shedding dogs, and F1 Irishdoodles are low - very low shedding dogs.

F1B Goldendoodles & Irishdoodles

The F1B generation is the second generation cross between an F1 doodle and one of its purebred parent breeds. In our program, we always breed back to a Poodle to bring in more of the Poodle-like coat qualities. This generation is 75% Poodle and either 25% Golden Retriever or 25% Irish Setter.

F1B Goldendoodles and F1B Irishdoodles may have either a wavy or a curly coat. It is typical to see a range of coat qualities in a litter of F1B doodle puppies.

F1 Goldendoodles are low shedding dogs, whereas F1 Irishdoodles are low - very low shedding dogs. This means that an F1B Irishdoodle will shed less than an F1B Goldendoodle. F1B Goldendoodles are low - very low shedding dogs, and F1B Irishdoodles are very low - non shedding dogs.

The F1BB generation is the third generation cross between an F1B doodle and one of its purebred parent breeds. In our program, we always breed back to a Poodle to bring in more of the Poodle-like coat qualities. This generation is 88% Poodle and either 12% Golden Retriever or 12% Irish Setter.

F1BB Goldendoodles and F1BB Irishdoodles may have either a wavy or a curly coat, depending on the coat quality of the F1B doodle parent. If the F1B parent has a wavy coat, there is a chance that the puppies could have either a wavy or curly coat. If the F1B parent has a curly coat, all the puppies will have curly coats.

F1B Goldendoodles are low - very low shedding dogs, whereas F1B Irishdoodles are very low - non shedding dogs. This means that an F1BB Irishdoodle will shed less than an F1BB Goldendoodle. F1BB Goldendoodles are very low - non shedding dogs, and F1BB Irishdoodles are non shedding dogs.

Shedding & Allergies

Doodles are often sought after for their allergy friendly, low - non shedding coats, but what is it about the Doodle coat that makes it more allergy friendly than other breeds?

First, it's important to know what triggers an allergic reaction to dogs. Contrary to popular belief, people are not allergic to dog fur. What really triggers the allergic reaction is the dog's saliva. Dogs lick their fur to clean themselves, and then the saliva coated fur and dander sheds off the dog and builds up in your home, or comes off on your hands, thus triggering an allergic reaction.

The reason that the Poodle coat is so allergy friendly is that it is curly and non shedding. Poodle coats are so curly and dense, that they trap their own fur and dander within their coats. This is also why Poodles require more regular grooming than other dogs. Grooming removes the build up of dead skin and fur that has been trapped by the curly coat.

The more Poodle-like your Doodle's coat is, the more likely it is for your Doodle to be allergy friendly. The higher percentage of Poodle, the less likely the dog will be to shed, and the curlier the coat is, the more saliva coated fur and dander will be trapped in the curls. This also means that in order to truly minimize allergens, you must regularly bathe and groom your Doodle.

Here at Ponsonby, we know the pain of adopting a pet and learning later that you're allergic to them. We've been there! That's why we make our purebred, F1, and F1B mama dogs available for allergy tests.
